Design Technology
Design and Technology is an inspiring area of the curriculum that gives today’s children the opportunity to develop their technical, creative and practical skills for today and the future. Projects develop the children’s understanding of how things work and how they can be improved.
Curriculum Intent
It is the intent of St. Joseph’s Primary School for Design Technology to be taught in all year groups, one topic per term. Our curriculum has a balance of content including, mechanisms, structures, textiles and food. Design Technology projects are often made cross curricular - linking to other subjects taught. We draw on the local area and make DT relevant through visits and visitors.
Curriculum Implementation
The teaching of Design Technology across the school follows the National curriculum. Children design products with a purpose in mind and an intended user of the product.
Food technology is implemented across the school with children developing an understanding of where food comes from, the importance of a varied and healthy diet and how to prepare this.
Children are taught and develop the skills of design, make, evaluate and technical knowledge appropriate to their development and key-stage. Individuality and innovation is encouraged alongside teaching the importance of making on-going changes and improvements during making stages.
Lancashire KLIPS are used and collaborated with between teachers and classes to ensure coverage of teaching and learning.
Curriculum Impact
The impact of our Design and Technology curriculum will be that our children develop and progress in the key skills outlined in the National Curriculum.
The impact of curriculum will ensure that our children develop and consolidate:
- Creative, technical and practical expertise to perform everyday tasks confidently and this will allow them to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.
- Evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others.
- Understand and apply the principles of nutrition and that they learn how to cook.
Formative assessment in Design Technology is used to inform differentiation, support and challenge required by the children. Summative assessment takes place at the end of the project/unit of work. Curriculum mapping and design is reviewed and adapted as required, where projects, skills development and cross-curricula links deem necessary.
