Early Reading

EYFS / Key Stage 1 Reading

Phonics and Early Reading

In the Early Years Foundation Stage, we are passionate about developing children’s early reading skills. Our aim is to provide children with a rigorous and sequential approach to the reading curriculum, using the “Read, Write, Inc.” scheme. which develops pupil’s fluency, confidence and enjoyment in reading.

When children start at our school they gain the phonics knowledge and language comprehension necessary to read. These fundamental skills are essential for future learning and will enable them to access all aspects of the curriculum.

Children’s reading skills are assessed regularly at all stages, to ensure any gaps are addressed effectively for all pupils. When children are learning to read we provide children with reading books which connect closely to the phonic knowledge.

We want all children to leave St Joseph’s with a life-long reading habit and a love of books because reading will improve their vocabulary, inspire them creatively and improve their ability to write well.

Sharing a story

At St. Joseph’s we promote a love and passion for reading and stories from the start of a child’s journey through our school.  Stories are shared and celebrated throughout the day.  In addition, we actively promote reading to your child at home.  This will help with language acquisition and literacy skills.  It will develop your child's imagination and empathy but most importantly it is a great way to spend time together!

At home…Why read with your child?
